PETALING JAYA: PKR launched its social media campaign on Wednesday (April 4) with two new smartphone apps aimed at younger voters.
The apps – Demi Rakyat and Teh Tariq – make use of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), said the party, part of the Pakatan Harapan Opposition alliance.
With the TehTariq app for example, people can take a virtual “picture” of themselves putting their arms around the shoulder of Pakatan chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohammad, president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, or de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The app also features videos on Pakatan’s manifesto.
The Demi Rakyat app will bring news about the Opposition coalition direct to users.
PKR strategic director Sim Tze Tzin said that they were dependant on social media apps as young voters aged 21-50 made up 60% of the electorate.
Those aged 21-30 make up 25% of voters, he added.
“This means that we have to engage with them using new technologies,” he told a press conference at the PKR headquarters here to launch the campaign.
The apps were launched by PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar.
PKR vice president Tian Chua said that both apps could be utilised by their Pakatan partners.
The launch coincided with PKR’s 19th anniversary.
