DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang was not moved by Khairy Jamaluddin's claim the latter regretted not speaking up about party grassroots' dissatisfaction to then prime-minister president Najib Abdul Razak.

Saying the Umno Youth chief's regrets were too little, too late, Lim stated Khairy still appeared to be avoiding the issue of the 1MDB scandal, which took place on the latter's watch.

He was referring to Khairy's recent interview with Channel News Asia in which he expressed remorse for not informing Najib the truth, that party grassroots had rejected Umno following the sacking of Muhyiddin Yassin and Mohd Shafie Apdal.

In the interview, Khairy, who is Rembau MP, said nobody in Umno "wanted to bell the cat" following the ousting of Muhyiddin and Mohd Shafie for their criticism of Najib, who was prime minister at the time, in regard to 1MDB.

“Nobody wanted to acknowledge we have a problem. That was a terrible mistake on our part," he had said.

In his statement today, Lim asked if Khairy was therefore now prepared to bell the cat over the beleaguered state investment fund.

"The regrets of the Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin is too little and too late.

"Is Khairy now prepared to bell the cat? Has he seen 'clear signals' now?

"Apparently not, for is as clear as day that Khairy is studiously avoiding the issue of 1MDB scandal and Malaysia being tarred with the epithet of a global kleptocracy," the statement read.

Lim said in order to make amends, Khairy should call for an urgent BN supreme council meeting on the matter, and for all former ministers and BN members of Parliament to tender a public apology for their "betrayal of the nation’s trust" in not speaking up against the 1MDB sooner.
